In their citizenship education, all primary schools in the Netherlands have to address contributing to society and respect for and knowledge of human rights, the rule of law and democratic values. The school culture must also be in accordance with these values. Freedom of expression, equality, understanding of others, tolerance, autonomy and the rejection of intolerance and discrimination must all be addressed. Schools can expand citizenship education to ‘global citizenship education’.
